For more information, please visit our site. 5/3/2011 Teaching Channel and YouTube celebrate National Teacher Day Candice Meyers, Teaching Channel Head of Product Development, guest blogged on the YouTube blog to commemorate National Teacher Day and celebrate the contribution of teachers worldwide. Teaching Channel is the first teachers-focused YouTube Edu partner, seeking to capture compelling teaching lessons on video and surface them to a wider audience so that others can find inspiration. Meyers highlighted two examples of innovative teaching lessons available on the Teaching Channel's YouTube channel, showing how Alex Kajitani uses rap to explain integers and how music teacherGenein Letford trumpets Duke Ellington to explain similes. CS4HS is a workshop for high school and middle school computer science teachers that introduces new and exciting concepts in computing and how to teach them. Any University, Community College, or Technical School in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, and Asia are welcome to apply. To submit an application and for more information about the CS4HS program please visit www.cs4hs.com. 1/19/11 Doodle 4 Google 2011 Launches Doodle 4 Google brings art to a whole new level, giving K-12 students the opportunity to design the Google.com homepage for a day. And, while they're at it, students can take home a $15,000 scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for their school. With the theme "What I'd like to do someday..." this year is all about students thinking big for the future. And, the competition has some exciting changes in 2011, including big name Guest Judges like Whoopi Goldberg, gold medal skater Evan Lysacek, and "Garfield" creator Jim Davis. Parents can register their children directly this year. Check out google.com/doodle4google for all contest rules, and be sure to register your students by March 2nd. Entries must be postmarked by March 16, 2011. Search results at every reading level We work every day to make information available to everyone on the web. This week we made it easier for to you pinpoint exactly the information you need with a new advanced search feature that categorizes results by reading level. For example, if you’re writing a college paper on [herbivores] you can refine to see only advanced material, or if you’re a grade school teacher preparing for a class on [herbivores] you can refine to see only basic material. To try it out, click "advanced search" to the right of the search box and click in the new reading level section. You can filter to see only results that are basic, intermediate or advanced, and annotate results with reading levels. If you choose to annotate results, on the results page you’ll see a graphical distribution of the pages classified in different categories for your search. 1/11/11 Google Science Fair 2011 On January 11, 2011, we are launching the inaugural Google Science Fair. Google has partnered with NASA, CERN, National Geographic, Scientific American and the LEGO Group to create a new STEM competition that any student aged 13 - 18 from around the world is eligible to enter. Already an expert? Apply to be a Google Apps for Education Certified Trainer to deliver professional development to schools. We will also be holding a 2 day Certified Trainer summit August 11-12, 2010. Review the requirements and apply for the program and the summit on the main application form. 7/1/10 CS4HS This summer, we’re funding 20 Computer Science for High School (CS4HS) workshops at colleges across the U.S. and will sponsor another 14 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. CS4HS is a workshop for high school and middle school computer science teachers that introduces new and exciting concepts in computing and how to teach them. Colleges develop a two-day program full of informational talks by industry leaders, discussions on CS curricula, demos and other opportunities for teachers to get hands-on skills they can take back to the classroom. This event is a FREE professional development experience designed to help educators get the most from Google's Geo products and technologies. Hear how the technology is seamlessly integrated into activities and supports learning objectives. Maine Township will share how they use Google Apps in lessons and demonstrate problem and project based activities that are only possible when using online read/write tools. You can even post your questions for the Maine Township High School District and Google teams ahead of time   3/11/10 YouTube is now offering parents and teachers more control over the content they see with the announcement of Safety Mode. When you opt in to Safety Mode, you're choosing not to see mature videos and comments that aren't against our Community Guidelines, but may not be appropriate for someone under 18. Like Google SafeSearch, Safety Mode on YouTube does not remove content from the site but rather keeps it off the page for users who opt in. No filter is 100%, so keep in mind that supervision is still the best parental control. Check out the demo! Esta herramienta es muy útil para docentes de estadística y de ciencias sociales ya que permite apreciar de manera animada cómo han evolucionan varios países, durante un lapso de tiempo determinado, respecto a pares de variables: natalidad vs ingresos; usuarios de Internet vs población total; mortalidad infantil vs ingresos per capita, para solo citar algunos ejemplos. GOOGLE CHROME Navegador de Internet que incorpora una interfaz simple y rápida para cargar páginas. Se destacan entre sus funciones la limpieza de su diseño, las pestañas que permiten cargar múltiples páginas en una sola ventana, el acceso a las páginas más visitadas mediante imágenes en miniatura y el ingreso al buscador de Google desde la barra de direcciones. Puede descargarse desde el siguiente enlace: http://www.google.com/chrome GRUPOS DE DISCUSIÓN Los Grupos de “Google” ayudan a los usuarios a permanecer en contacto con otras personas, acceder información y generar debates en línea o mediante correo electrónico. Además, con este servicio los usuarios pueden plantear preguntas y recibir respuestas; así como compartir experiencias referentes a compra y uso de productos  u  otros temas específicos. Herramienta ideal para construir colectivamente conocimiento en torno a un tema particular, además de  enterarse de los avances de otras personas en ese tema o publicar los propios.

GOOGLE VIDEO

Servicio que permite localizar videos relacionados con diversos temas,  entre los miles de videos publicados por otros usuarios tanto de Google Video como de de YouTube. También, los obten entre idos a partir de imágenes emitidas por canales de TV tales como ABC, CNN, Fox News o Discovery Channel, otros. Además, los usuarios registrados pueden publicar sus videos en este servicio y compartirlos con otras personas o incluirlos en un blog propio mediante código embebido.

GOOGLE MAPS

“Google Maps” ofrece un servicio de tecnología cartográfica potente y fácil de usar. En este se combinan mapas, búsquedas de empresas (ubicación, información de contacto e indicaciones sobre cómo llegar), sitios de interés general, imágenes satelitales, búsquedas de calles y de otras rutas.

GOOGLE EARTH

Google Earth es un programa que se puede descargar e instar en computadores personales y permite visualizar imágenes de la tierra provenientes de satélites. Además, pueden desplegarse imágenes en 3D e información de un área específica proveniente del motor de búsqueda de Google. Este programa es muy útil para capturar, almacenar, manipular y analizar información geográfica. A partir de la versión 5 se puede bucear en el mar y visitar, por ejemplo, el lugar más profundo del océano: la Fosa de las Marianas. Esta nueva funcionalidad cuenta con el apoyo de la National Geographic y es una de las herramientas de Google con mayores posibilidades para llevar a cabo proyectos en Ciencias Sociales.   

KNOL

Knol es uno de los proyectos más recientes de Google y consiste en la creación de unidades de conocimiento por parte de los usuarios, quienes comparten con los demás lo que saben acerca de un tema específico. Cubre aspectos relacionados con Ciencia, Información Médica, Geografía, Historia, Entretenimiento, Manuales, Información sobre productos, etc. Además, permite sugerir el nombre de expertos en temas específicos.

GOOGLE APPS

Google Apps proporciona herramientas de comunicación y colaboración en línea a Instituciones Educativas. Incluye correo electrónico institucional mediante Gmail y  herramientas de productividad como Google Docs, Calendar y Talk. La ventaja de este recurso es que al ser herramientas alojadas por Google, no se requiere descargar, instalar ni mantener ningún tipo de software.

GOOGLE DOCS

Herramienta en línea que permite trabajar con el Procesador de Texto, la Hoja de Calculo y el Presentador Multimedia. Ofrece las características básicas que generalmente se encuentran en este tipo de programas en su versión de escritorio.Google Docs acepta la mayoría de formatos de archivo y permite además, importar, compartir, almacenar, exportar archivos y publicarlos como página Web. Recomendamos consultar el recurso “Suites de Oficina en Línea” para informarse en detalle de todas las opciones ofrecidas por esta herramienta.

HERRAMIENTAS DEL IDIOMA

Las  Herramientas del idioma ofrecen traducciones automáticas entre diferentes idiomas, traducciones de textos o de páginas Web. La traducción se realiza mediante un programa de computador y aunque no es muy precisa, si aporta una idea general del texto o del contenido de un sitio Web.

BLOC DE NOTAS

El Bloc de Notas permite crear, organizar y compartir con otras personas apuntes, comentarios, textos tomados de Internet, fotos e hipervínculos. También facilita tomar notas o recortes de páginas Web sin salirse de ellas. Es muy útil cuando se realizan investigaciones (CMI) ya que se puede recolectar información en línea y acceder a ella desde cualquier sitio con conexión a Internet.

GMAIL

Servicio gratuito de correo electrónico en línea que cuenta con excelentes funcionalidades.  Incluye, entre otros, capacidad de almacenamiento de varios GB, tecnología Google de búsqueda de mensajes, sistema de etiquetas en lugar de carpetas, filtros configurables para mensajes, filtro de spam, interfaz en varios idiomas, sistema IMAP y POP para administrar el correo en programas como Outlook o Thunderbird. Al crear una cuenta en este servicio, el mismo nombre de usuario y contraseña permite acceder a otros recursos y servicios que ofrece Google (Docs, Bloc de Notas, Calendar, etc).

ACELERADOR WEB DE DESCARGAS

El Acelerador Web (Google Web Accelerator) es una aplicación que carga más rápido las páginas Web en un navegador de Internet. Usarlo es muy sencillo, se descarga el programa y se instala en el equipo. Esta herramienta es muy valiosa para las salas de informática en las cuales todos los estudiantes de una clase deben navegar por diferentes páginas de Internet. Contribuye a que rinda más el tiempo destinado a llevar a cabo investigaciones en Internet.

SKETCHUP

Programa de diseño grafico 3D muy potente y fácil de usar. Contiene elementos y objetos de dibujo que simplifican la creación de gráficos o planos. Google SketchUp permite compartir creaciones con otros usuarios por medio de Galerías 3D y también ofrece la posibilidad de insertar diseños propios en Google Earth con coordenadas y escala reales.

PICASA

Picasa es un software gratuito para gestión de fotografías. Localiza automáticamente las fotos almacenadas en el disco duro del computador y las organiza en carpetas, ordenándolas por nombre, tamaño o fecha. Ofrece efectos de edición fotográfica muy potentes y versátiles, además permite compartir imágenes en álbumes en línea, enviarlas por correo electrónico o imprimirlas.

CALENDARIO (CALENDAR)

El Calendario de Google es una agenda gratuita y en línea, en la cual se pueden registrar eventos importantes como: calendario escolar, cumpleaños, reuniones, congresos, citas, etc. Para acceder al servicio, basta con tener una cuenta de correo electrónico en Gmail. Esta agenda se puede compartir con otras personas lo que la hace muy atractiva para que los Coordinadores Académicos realicen la programación escolar de la Institución Educativa y la compartan con directivos y docentes. Además, puede programarse para recibir en el correo electrónico recordatorios de fechas importantes.

“GOOGLE” DESKTOP

Aplicación que permite buscar en el disco duro del computador correos electrónicos y archivos en cualquier formato. Utiliza la tecnología de búsqueda de “Google”, lo que la hace muy rápida; permite buscar palabras o frases dentro de mensajes de correo electrónico, archivos de Word, Excel, PowerPoint y de texto; admite la búsqueda en paralelo en el disco duro del computador y en Internet.

Google actualiza constantemente esta herramienta y asegura que respeta la privacidad de los usuarios. Se puede descargar gratuitamente de http://desktop.google.com/.

LISTADOS

¿Necesita la lista completa de los países africanos, pero sólo recuerda cinco de ellos? ¿Requiere todas las partes de una célula, pero únicamente se acuerda del núcleo y del citoplasma? “Google Sets” (http://labs.google.com/sets) puede ayudarle. Solamente escriba los términos que recuerda (por ejemplo, Gana, Egipto, Libia, Madagascar, Mali) y esta herramienta le completará el listado con el resto de países africanos.
